The trees billowed from the rage of the storm, ramming against the window of the small shelter of the Arthur up in the mountains of Thesk, where a strong Mrs. Uthal Arthur proceeded to scream in agony. Her husband stood near the door, ready to defend his wife from unwanted visitors and enemies during her most vulnerable moments. A human midwife appeared from the earthy kitchen followed by an earth genasi doula and a labour nurse who carries a clipboard at all times. Uthal let out another scream, similar to the growls Mr. Ora Arthur has heard during a hunt for food. Although goliaths are known for their tolerance for pain, especially since punishment was through painful techniques, Uthal continued to have surges of screams until finally, a small dark grey goliath was born.
The parents immediately named her Spence; Spencora was her full name. Though longer names are uncommon, the Arthurs believed in honouring Ora’s mother’s sister, who had died keeping them safe from a tribe invasion when he was a small child; barely 7 years of age. Ora came over to the side of the bed, and they smiled upon their new creation, looking at Spence as she was the most beautiful art piece they had ever seen. From the blizzard outside came three knocks. The midwife moved to open the door and the tribal chief Talai walked through. He came up to the couple and the baby by the bed and demanded silence. The whole house held their breath as the chief proceeded to declare a nickname for the child.
“Keeneye Spence,” he stated matter-of-factly, though the tiniest teardrops formed at the edges of his eyes. In a small pot, the doula planted a tiny pussy willow seed; a contribution and memory to this joyful day.
The 6 of them stood or sat in silent content, rejoicing over the new spirit who had joined them.

Spence was sitting down in her usual underground room when Uthal and Ora came in. She couldn’t understand everything they said, but the tone of their voices suggested it was something important. They held out their hands for her to hold and led her wobbly legs over to Ora’s working room. She had never been allowed in and resisted slightly, but they tugged her along until she complied. As they entered the room, the most notably unusual object was some sort of tall, majestic-looking thing with soft buds sprouting from it. She reached out to touch one of the buds and it appeared to softly glow a shade of pink. A flow of lines intertwining with each other rose up from the branch that Spence had touched and went into her chest, being absorbed by her essence. She was scared at first and tried to swat at the energy flowing into her, but with two parents’ hands on her shoulders, she accepted it eventually. Once the tree stopped producing that special light, her parents bowed to the tree and picked her up gently, carrying her out of the room.

Ora was holding Spence over his shoulder with her crying and pounding her fists in refusal while Uthal tried to discipline her. They walked a good distance away from their home village and finally reached the town of Thespin, the only town with a school in these parts. An angry Ora finally placed Spence on the ground and smacked her on the head, telling her she was going to school and that she had to play nice with the other children. Spence sat on the side of the road and bunched up her tiny face, not accepting the fact that she was actually going to school and going to socialize with strangers. Her parents left her in the charge of Mr. Wodlin, an experienced and kind kindergarten teacher. She felt betrayed by her parents but within the hour, she was making friends with new classmates in a heartbeat.
Little did she know that a tiny baby brother was going to be created very soon...

A bouncy Spence ran across the snowy plains that covered her village. Behind houses and through lawns, she trudged through even the thickest snow with ease, her skin accustomed to the harsh climate. Past forests of evergreens she went, only stopping once she reached her favourite tree by the river. She bowed low, displaying her deepest respect for her friend and grabbed a nearby empty wooden watering can. She broke a hole in the icy river and filled it up, being careful not to spill as the river slowly refroze. The tree was then watered with a happy Spence smiling. She remembered her father telling her that this tree had been infused with grandma’s sister’s spirit and when she died in battle, two seeds had sprouted from beside her, right underneath her hands. She remembered planting the seed within the springtime with her parents when she was 4, taking care to not hurt the willow tree in any way. Spence , in her small childish state, stood up and walked towards the tree. No words were spoken except for the whistles of the trees and the babbling brook. She looked up at the protecting spirit and hugged it, taking care not to snap off any of the delicate new branches.

Spence was so confused by all of the sounds that were everywhere all at once while her Mom was on a bed more tired and in pain than she had ever seen her before. Her Dad was busily trying not to barf and there were strangers in the house that Spence had never met. One of them noticed her and, in shock, tried to pick her up but failed to. He then pointed her frantically in the direction of her bedroom when her Mom let out an agonizing scream. Spence was extremely scared and ran to her room, hiding underneath her blankets. She stayed there for over 8 hours, with no food or drink, scarred by the multiple terrors her Mom was going through.

The light danced around the forest as a much older Spence approached her favourite tree. It was a quiet place she had been coming to for forever whenever she felt alone or sad. This tree was her guardian when she was young, and she felt inclined in return to now protect it from the bullies at school. She went up to hold one of the buds in her hand and stroked its soft textured sphere.
Suddenly, from the far right, Spence saw something flash by. She turned towards it instinctively and saw a quick shadow running away, looking very similar to her arch nemesis school friend Lance, an elf from faraway lands. Her first thought was to run after him, but he was definitely too quick for her. She sat down to think about what to do but then remembered what she had been holding.
Looking down at her hand, she opened it to reveal a broken branch with the little bud she had been holding. Anxiety and sadness in Spence filled her up as she desperately tried to reattach the branch to no avail. What her father had told her about this tree made her eyes fill up with tears and she started to cry. She couldn’t believe she had done this, and to such a special tree. Sobbing underneath it, she was surprised by a small voice disturbing the sounds of the forest.
“Hey…” a little female’s voice said softly.
Embarrassed, she quickly wiped away the tears and turned towards it. A small girl dwarf who Spence had seen frequently in her little brother’s classes was cautiously approaching her.
“What’s wrong?” the little girl asked curiously.
“Nothing. It’s none of your business,” Spence stated harshly. The girl didn’t seem to mind about the tone of Spence's voice which surprised her. No one at school dared cross paths with a 5”9’ goliath.
“Really?” the girl asked, being persistently annoying but in a naive way.
“No. Please just leave me alone,” she barked, turning away as she felt the tears in her eyes coming back.
“Wellllllllll if you’re reallly sure you’re okay… I just was coming to offer some of my mom’s favourite brownie cookies if you were sad but if you’re not, I guess I should get on my merry way,” she turned to walk away in a dramatically slow manner.
“...No I’m not okay,” Spence exclaimed, grateful to have someone to talk to. The little girl smiled and introduced herself as Caldor. She came right up to Spence and sat beside her, ready to listen to a story.

Spence had just woken up when someone rushed her outside of the house. Literally someone picked her up and hauled her right out, not taking cautions as to how fast they were going. She had barely rubbed her eyes when she looked at her house and couldn’t believe her eyes. The entire living room had flames coming out of the windows; with a giant flame erupting every once and awhile. Her Mom was roaring behind her, screaming for her husband and Spence's brother while Spence was still really sleepy. Everything looked like a blur and soon the edges of her sight started to get fuzzy. The person who had carried her out said “everything is going to be okay,” before she completely passed out.
When she came around, she was no longer in the wilderness of the mountains. She was in a southern hospital surrounded by doctors and nurses of all kinds. A kind-looking human nurse looked at her and told her her brother had died in the fire due to an eruption in his stomach. She tried to make sense of what the nurse had said but couldn’t figure out how to. Then a doctor inserted some liquids that led to her arm that she didn’t notice and she fell back asleep.

Everyone else was asleep in the small house they were living in, but Spence could not sleep. Her brother’s death still haunted her to this day and she couldn’t help but feel like he was still out there, scouring the mountains for survival. The police looked for a body for months but it had been so long that the likelihood he survived was slim. No one knew how the fire had started but her Dad had had some rivalries with some elves in the east that may have had something to do with it. Spence couldn’t find the peace and quiet to sleep so she got up from the king-sized bed she had been laying on and went to sit outside only to find her Mom had beat her to it.
“Oh hi hon,” she murmured nonchalantly.
“Couldn’t sleep?” Spence asked, wondering if she had been thinking about the same thing.
“Just some memories,” she quietly exclaimed, lost in thought.
“Me too,” Spence whispered under her breath and sat beside her Mom on the stairs of the porch, looking out into a valley that wasn’t theirs. They sat together for hours while an unaware Ora slept soundly inside, enjoying the time they had together.
